Tanzania Crackdown on Planned Protest Results in Streets Deserted.

Quiet avenue in a Tanzanian city
With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense.

Security has been tightened across Tanzania with officers and soldiers observed on patrol in key urban areas ahead of expected anti-government protests called to coincide with the nation's independence anniversary.

By midday, however, no demonstrations had begun.

People living in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza reported an unusually slow start to the day, with many people choosing to remain indoors amid uncertainty over if the demonstrations would proceed.

The demonstrations were called to call for changes to the political system in the wake of the unrest that followed last October's elections which resulted in an unconfirmed death toll.

Government Acknowledges Employing Force

The authorities have admitted using force against protesters, claiming that certain elements aimed to topple the government.

On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This stood in sharp contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.

While quiet, a palpable tension filled the air.

Heightened Security Nationwide

Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while officers took up positions at strategic locations, including around important public buildings and facilities.

On social media, activists and campaigners urged followers to remain vigilant, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored past mobilization efforts in the country, when turnout increased later in the day.

Motorists who ventured out reported frequent checks at roadblocks, where police interrogated motorists about where they were headed.

Government Stance and Prohibitions

The government has not issued specific statements on the heightened security measures or on the scheduled demonstrations.

The government has prohibited the intended demonstrations and cancelled independence day celebrations, advising the public to remain at home.

"With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense."

The day's events painted a picture of a country under strain, where the potential for demonstration resulted in a security clampdown in advance that effectively emptied typically busy cities.
