A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
